    365 Bible Reading

    May 5 – Matthew 23

LOOK:  Jesus warns the religious lost about their showy religion.  He tells them how much He does not like the way they put themselves out there to be seen and admired by men.  Jesus then warns us not to be putting men up to be honored above God but instead that every minister must be a servant and humble instead.

LISTEN:  We can see how much Jesus demands that we put self to death and learn humility.  We need to be reminded that the opposite of love is not hate…it is selfishness and pride.  The Great Command is to love God and love people more than we love ourselves and that is impossible to do when we are self absorbed and selfish.

LEARN:  When is the last time that you put others above yourself?  How are you doing at taking up your cross and denying yourself?

    365 Bible Reading

    May 4 – Proverbs 18

LOOK:  “An unfriendly person pursues selfish ends
and against all sound judgment starts quarrels.

Fools find no pleasure in understanding
but delight in airing their own opinions…

The lips of fools bring them strife,
and their mouths invite a beating.

The mouths of fools are their undoing,
and their lips are a snare to their very lives.”

LISTEN:  I’m reminded when reading these verses about the “fools” that I have ministered to over the years.  I’m not trying to be nasty but I’ve counseled my fair share of people who were living arrogant, disobedient lives and they constantly refused to listen to Godly advice.  Typically, those who are living willful, sinful lives become angry and are their own worst enemies.

LEARN:  Beware of the fool…they will cause damage!!

    365 Bible Reading

    May 3 – Matthew 22

LOOK:  Jesus continues to deal with religious lost.  Jesus tells the parable of the wedding banquet warning the religious lost that the future kingdom is coming and those coming will be rewarded but those who refuse will be left behind.  Jesus teaches about giving taxes to Caesar.  Jesus deals with the trick questions coming from the Sadducees and then restates the Greatest Command…”Love the Lord your God with all your hearts and with all your soul and with all your mind…Love your neighbor as yourself”.  Jesus ends this chapter by stating His authority as the Son of God.

LISTEN:  Most of Matthew is about proving Jesus is God’s Son to the Jewish people.  However, they missed Him…worse they rejected Him!

LEARN:  What have you done with the evidence that Jesus is God’s Son?  Have you accepted Him as Lord over your life?  Make no mistake, one day every knee will bow to His Kingship.  Be sure that your bow will be in worship not in fear!

    365 Bible Reading

    May 2 – Matthew 21

LOOK:  Matthew leaves out a fascinating detail about the Triumphal entry…Jesus is weeping loudly as he enters the city.  He cries for their wrong belief that He was there to take over as earthly king when He was actually coming there to die for their sins.  Jesus enters the temple in Jerusalem and clears it of all the ungodly selling and money changing.  My favorite story is tucked in this passage – Jesus and the fig tree…check it out…it always makes me laugh!  Jesus is then challenged about His authority and tells two parables to confront His enemies.

LISTEN:  We are hearing about Jesus’ last days before His death.  He is heading to Jerusalem to die an agonizing death for our sins.  As you read, I hope you see the focus He has on giving people a final warning about Who He is and what He is there to do.

LEARN:  Stop for a second to thank God for Jesus and His wonderful gift of Salvation.

    365 Bible Reading

    May 1 – Matthew 20
LOOK: Jesus tells the story about workers in a vineyard and how they were paid by the owner. Some worked all day for a days wage and others only an hour for the same wage. The workers that worked all day were upset, feeling like they deserved more pay (I would be upset too!). Jesus makes a point about forgiveness and future reward as a matter of grace from God that only He can give and choose to lavish on whoever He chooses. Next a mother requests prominent positions in the future kingdom for her sons. Jesus explains that the request was inappropriate and then deals with the other disciples who were upset about the request. Jesus reminds His disciples for the third time that He was heading to Jerusalem to suffer and die. Jesus takes the time to heal two blind men on the roadside.
LISTEN: The story from the vineyard is a great reminder of the nature of grace. Grace is undeserved favor and unwarranted forgiveness. Grace is not getting what you deserve (Hell) and instead getting what you don’t deserve (Heaven). Who are we to consider judging the fairness of God? We should be thankful that God chooses to be gracious and not “fair”.
LEARN: Have you thanked God lately for His grace? Have you stopped to consider what your eternal destiny would be if not for the grace of God?
