    365 Bible Reading

    February 15 – Acts 18

LOOK:  Paul continues to journey for the Lord.  He stays with Aquila and Pricilla where he makes “tents” for a living.  These tents could be small portable tents used by travelers or the “tallit” = prayer shawl used by the Jews on a daily basis.

Paul continues to be abused by the Jewish community and then takes the Gospel to the Gentiles were many believe and are saved.  Apollos is a strong teacher for the cause of Christ even though he still needs to learn more from the disciples.  He is sent to learn and grow while he is still being effective refuting the Jews and proclaiming Christ.

LISTEN:  I’m struck with difficulty the Jewish community had with accepting Jesus as the Messiah and then I realize that many still have not come to faith in Christ. Simply put, Jesus came to the Jews first but they rejected Him.  They missed Him and continue to miss Him as Messiah today.

LEARN:  We should be concerned for anyone who rejects Christ.  Our concern should be compassionate and not aggressive.  If you know someone who needs Jesus, pray for them today and look for ways to share the Gospel with them.

    365 Bible Reading

    February 14 – Acts 17

LOOK:  Paul, Silas and Timothy preach the Gospel in Thessalonica and are harassed, eventually having to leave the area.  In Berea, they are received well and many come to faith in Christ.  However, those pesky trouble makers from Thessalonica come there and cause trouble for the there too.  Eventually, they send Paul away for his safety but Silas and Timothy stay to encourage the believers.  Paul ends up in Athens where he has the most masterful speech in front of an interested crowd of idol worshippers.

LISTEN:  We continue to see the spreading of the Gospel.  Even though the apostles are facing persecution, they remain obedient and faithful and every time they have to separate for their safety, God uses this to multiply their efforts.  Just think…if Paul didn’t have to flee for his life, we would never have his masterful speech in Athens.

LEARN:  Listening to Paul in Athens approach the Gospel to a people who do not believe in God gives us a great example of how to preach the Gospel to unbelievers.  Paul was tactful, gracious and respectful.  Let’s consider how we can preach the Gospel with gentleness and respect.

    365 Bible Reading

    February 13 – Acts 16

LOOK:  Paul and Silas are on their missionary journey and they recruit a young Timothy.  The Bible makes it clear that Paul and his entourage are led by God on this journey.  They go to Macedonia as directed in a vision and meet Lydia who receives the Lord and hosts the group.  Next they meet a demon possessed woman who made a living by fortunetelling.  They cast out her demon and restore the woman.  The people who make money off this woman throw a fit and have Paul and Silas arrested and beaten.  God miraculously gets Paul and Silas free from prison and even the jailer gets saved and his whole family.

LISTEN:  When reading this passage, I am impressed with how God guides and directs His servants.  The important issue for God’s servants is obedience.

LEARN:  Are you listening to the direction of God for your life?  Be careful not to live the self-absorbed life common today.  Walk closely with God and let Him lead.

    365 Bible Reading

    February 12 – Acts 15

LOOK:  Well, we made it to chapter 15 and the early church already had a controversy and had to have a meeting and write a letter.  This sounds so familiar it’s sadly funny.  The dispute is over the Gentiles that are being saved and the division between the Jews about the requirements they had to meet.  The church did the right thing by sending Paul and Barnabas with the official ruling and to encourage the Gentiles in their faith.  However, after this issue is resolved, the next ignites.  Paul and Barnabas part ways over a dispute they had about who was worthy to travel with them to do the work of the Lord.

LISTEN:  It had to be an interesting time for the early church.  The Gentiles being saved had to throw many for a loop.  They probably never saw that coming and it had to go against everything they knew and believed.  I am excited to read about the brave leaders who stood up for the right and endured the ridicule of their peers.  By the way, God can even use the disputes that happen in the church.  When Paul and Barnabas part ways the result was that there were now two teams preaching the Gospel.  Their division was God’s multiplication.

LEARN:  Don’t go looking for trouble in the church, but recognize that from the earliest of times the believers struggled to get along.  The church is not a place for perfect people, just the perfect place for broken people!
