    January 6 – Proverbs 1

    LOOK:  The book of Proverbs comes with it’s own purpose statement:

    for gaining wisdom and instruction;
    for understanding words of insight;
    for receiving instruction in prudent behavior,
    doing what is right and just and fair;
    for giving prudence to those who are simple,
    knowledge and discretion to the young—
    let the wise listen and add to their learning,
    and let the discerning get guidance—
    for understanding proverbs and parables,
    the sayings and riddles of the wise.”

    LISTEN:  Proverbs gives such practical advice about how to live a great life. We are told what usually happens when we make good choices and bad choices.

    LEARN:  Wisdom is not just knowing what is wrong and right but choosing to do what is right no matter who is watching.

    365 Bible Reading

    January 5 – Mark 5

    LOOK:  One of my favorite passages…Jesus removes a legion of demons torturing a man, sending them into a herd of pigs that run off a cliff and drown on the sea.  This shows the power and authority Jesus has over all things even the unseen world.  Jesus then goes to raise a dead girl but instead is touched secretly by a woman with an illness that had plagued her for twelve years.  The woman is healed and Jesus still goes and raises the girl from the dead.

    LISTEN:  These verses are here to establish Jesus’ authority and confirm His identity.  The people that experienced these things had strange responses…the town asked Jesus to leave, perhaps His power scared them.  The woman just wanted to touch the edge of His garment and not bother Him or make a scene.  People do weird things with Jesus!

    LEARN:  What am I doing with Jesus?  I pray that I understand His power and authority.  I pray that I won’t make Him little and powerless in my life.  Jesus deserves preeminence!!

    365 Bible Reading

    January 4 – Mark 4

    LOOK:  Jesus is teaching the crowds in parables and then explaining further to the disciples.  “This is what the kingdom of God is like” is how Christ starts these teachings using everyday things like seeds, lamps and harvests.  Jesus then calms a storm and saves the lives of the men on His boat.  They ask this question, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

    LISTEN:  I see Jesus clearly teaching about true following and false following.  Why is it that we always think we are the “good soil” in that parable?  We should check ourselves and see if we are producing a crop or withering inside.

    LEARN:  We should all answer the question for ourselves that the disciples asked, “Who is this…Jesus?”  Do we have a proper concept of Jesus or a small view of who He is?

    365 Bible Reading

    January 3 – Mark 3

    LOOK:  Jesus continues to heal and help people.  Jesus appoints His twelve disciples.  The crowds follow Jesus and the sick press forward to just touch Him trying to be healed.  It must have been a chaotic scene!  The religious lost try to claim that Jesus had lost His mind and was actually a crazy man.
    LISTEN:  The ministry of helping people both physically and spiritually become an overwhelming task.  Jesus keeps His focus on others instead of His own comfort.
    LEARN:  I’m thinking about the amount of time spent on my own comfort opposed to my time spent helping others.  I want to flip this in 2018.

    356 Bible Reading

    January 2 – Mark 2

    LOOK:  The religious lost begin to question and challenge Jesus.  Jesus heals a paralyzed man and commends the faith of his friends.  Jesus calls Levi and then eats with his sinner friends.  Jesus then deals with the religious rules that people were living for as a replacement for a real relationship with God.
    LISTEN:  I’m struck with the frustration that Jesus must have faced with the religious system that turned against Him and would fight Him for a form of religion that will not please God.
    LEARN:  I pray that my religious life and practice is not a replacement for what God desires…a relationship with Jesus that transforms my life.
