January 22 – Mark 16
LOOK: Mary Magdalene and Salome go to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body early on the third day after His death. When they arrive the tomb is open and empty except for the angel who tells them what has happened. Jesus appears to several people at different times and different locations. Finally, Jesus appears before the eleven remaining disciples and rebukes them for their lack of faith. Jesus then commands His followers to preach the Gospel and He talks about the power and protection they will have.
LISTEN: Many people struggle with the strange words from Jesus at the end of this passage, “And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.” I don’t believe that Jesus was telling us to pick up poisonous snakes or drink deadly poison. I think He was talking about the supernatural protection on those who witness and serve Him.
LEARN: I had the opportunity to be in Jerusalem at the location thought to be the empty tomb of Jesus. It was a very emotionally exciting experience. I tell everyone, “the best thing to see in Jerusalem is the nothing inside the empty tomb” – He is not here for He has risen!!
